Summary
As an avg. of 4 expts. in Tennessee, the acre yields of corn with 5000 plants per acre were 62 and 74 bushels where N applns. were 0 and 30 lb. per acre, respectively. Where the stand was 9000 plants per acre, the acre yields were 80, 87, and 93 bushels with N applns. of 30, 60, and 90 lb./acre, respectively. In a 3-yr. test on Kaufman fine sandy loam in Mississippi, the respective acre yields with 0.60, and 120 lb. of N/acre were 27, 63, and 66 with a stand of 4000 plants, and 31, 70, and 100 with a stand of 12,000 plants/acre. Applns. of minor elements have generally had no effect on corn yield except for isolated areas in Alabama and Florida. Soil moisture was greater in mulched than in unmulched plots; the yield of corn was 50 bu./ acre without mulch and 95 bu./acre with mulch. An expt. on a Piedmont soil in N. Carolina showed that the yield of corn was 75 bu./acre with normal culture and 90 bu./acre after subsoiling.
