Summary
Caring has gained increasing attention in nursing over the past decade, yet there is lack of clarity and multiple variations in presentation. The purpose of this study was to analyze caring from triangulated sources - nursing literature, interviews, and observations of nurses using Schwartz-Barcott & Kim's hybrid and Rodgers' evolutionary model of concept development. The study found that caring is an individually and socially defined creative process of using presence, defined by practicing nurses as multi-dimensional work, where a holistic connection is made with a person to meet a recognized need. Caring has significance in nursing, is used widely, and its application is expanding, but not found to be pervasive in nursing practice.
