Summary
This chapter documents the evolving historical relationship between humans and Prosopis species in Haiti. The evidence presented here is drawn from an analysis of secondary research spanning several centuries and primary research from a decade of direct, anthropological fieldwork conducted by the author at local, regional, and national levels in Haiti. The chapter describes the contours of the most-prevalent national energy paradigm in operation in Haiti today-the production of charcoal in rural, farmer-managed woodlots, from Prosopis coppice harvested on short rotation cycles and then transported by land and sea for consumption in urban areas, meeting the nation's predominant energy demands.
